Deliverables
Reliance Rail is responsible for financing, designing, manufacturing and maintaining 626 carriages (78 sets with two spare carriages) as part of the Public Private Partnership (PPP) project with RailCorp. The trains have been named the ‘Waratah’ fleet by the NSW Government.
Detailed design of the Waratah trains was complete in 2009 and manufacture of the 78 sets is now in full production. The project has also moved to the testing and commissioning phase as the parties prepare for the first train to be delivered by late 2010.
Reliance Rail is required to make 72 trains available to RailCorp for timetabled service each day until the end of the 30-year contract term.
The scope of this PPP project is broader than the delivery of the 626 carriages – the largest rolling stock order ever ordered by an Australian rail operator. It also includes a minimum 30-year contract to maintain the fleet and the associated design, construction and maintenance of a state-of- the-art maintenance centre, and the provision of four simulators for crew training.
The PPP contract term for fleet maintenance continues for 30 years after the delivery of the tenth-last train - until about 2043 - and may at RailCorp’s option, be extended for two additional periods each of five years.
