Reliance Rail

The Project

Reliance Rail will finance, design, manufacture and maintain 78 eight-car, air-conditioned suburban electric trains, plus two spare carriages as part of the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Project with RailCorp.

Encompassing 626 double deck carriages in six years, it is the largest rolling stock order ever ordered by an Australian railway.

Reliance Rail will progressively roll-out the trains between 2010 and 2013, with at least 59 of the double-deck trains in operational service by 2012 and the remainder in service the following year.

Reliance Rail will make 72 trains available to RailCorp for timetabled service each day until the end of the contract term.

The PPP contract term for fleet maintenance continues for 30 years after the delivery of the tenth-last train - until about 2043 - and may at RailCorp’s option, be extended for two additional periods each of five years.

Reliance Rail will also finance, design, manufacture and maintain a facility at Auburn in Sydney, which it will use to maintain CityRail’s passenger trains for a minimum of 30 years.

In addition, Reliance Rail will also provide simulators for crew training.
