Sydney's new train
Sydney’s next generation train will include new and enhanced features for greater passenger and crew safety and comfort.
The 626 air-conditioned carriages will replace 498 non air-conditioned cars and create additional capacity for the Sydney travelling public, while providing a safe, reliable and enjoyable travelling experience.
The new train will leverage the successful Millennium Train design, with increased passenger safety and comfort features as outlined below for improved reliability and performance:
- Upgraded crashworthiness standards to 55 km/hr
- External cameras for security and safety performance
- Additional safety system with the introduction of the Electronic Train Control System
- Additional handrails and Passenger Emergency Help Points
- Reversible seating enabling passengers to face the direction of travel and incorporating a mechanism that inhibits movement of the seat back in a collision
- 16 wheelchair spaces per eight-car train
- Additional door and selective controls in both the driver and guard cabs to prevent doors opening in a platform overrun
- A restyled crew cab to the trailer driver car to improve the driver’s field of vision, including a larger driver’s side window
